A man found incompetent to stand trial in a 2019 fatal stabbing was discovered to be released after Greenfield police responded Sunday to reports of him experiencing hallucinations at a residence while celebrating Father’s Day. Amando Lang, who had been committed to Mendota Mental Health Institute after the killing of Ben Christianson, was released without apparent notification to local authorities. “This is a rare but deeply serious matter that demands our full attention,” Greenfield Assistant Police Chief Eric Lindstrom told WISN 12 News. “Mr. Lang has already shown a disturbing willingness to commit an unprovoked act of extreme violence.”State Rep. Bob Donovan criticized the handling of Lang’s release. “How the hell does this happen?” Donovan said. “He has been staying at a halfway house that I would characterize as a quarter house given the fact they are letting this individual wander the streets unsupervised.”Lang was originally charged in the August 2019 killing of Christianson, 49, a Madison engineer who was collecting soil samples when Lang allegedly approached and slashed his throat in what police described as a random attack.During Sunday’s incident, officers found Lang making involuntary movements and experiencing what he described as “a bad trip,” though he claimed to be taking his prescribed medications. He was voluntarily admitted to the Mental Health Emergency Center for evaluation.Greenfield Mayor Michael Neitzke has been pursuing the issue with Milwaukee District Attorney Kent Lovern regarding necessary state action, according to Donovan’s statement.
