COVID-19 Symptoms In India: India is once again witnessing a fresh uptick in COVID-19 cases, with over 1,200 infections reported recently, most prominently from the southern states. Health experts have attributed the current surge to the newly detected latent variants NB1.8.1 and LF.7, both descendants of the Omicron lineage.

While the overall case severity remains moderate, outpatient departments (OPDs) across hospitals are seeing a notable rise in footfall, with patients commonly presenting symptoms such as hoarse voice, throat pain, diarrhea, and mild stomach cramps. These evolving symptoms serve as a reminder that the virus, though milder than earlier variants like Delta, is still actively circulating and capable of spreading rapidly, particularly among vulnerable populations.

COVID-19 Wave In India: Cases On The Rise Again

Meanwhile, the rate of cases remains little to moderate, and the hospitals are not seeing any humongous rise in ICU admissions that are directly linked to Covid infection however the OPD visits have strikingly increased over the past weeks, and the footfall of patients has surged by a noticeable number of three to four times, indicating a sharp uptick in mild to moderate cases.

At the moment, the circulating variants of the virus, primarily JN.1, NB.1.8.1, and LF.7, are all descendants of the Omicron variant, as noted by the health officials, the variants are more prone to evading the vaccine effect due to their high number of mutations that make them extremely powerful than the past variants. This new variant, though stronger than any, is still relatively milder in its symptoms than the past variants, like the Delta. However, it has been noticed that individuals with past underlying health conditions such as diabetes, chronic respiratory illnesses, or other intense immunity issues, as can be seen, have a tougher time with the virus. The elderly people and young children are at an increased risk of getting the virus too.

New Symptoms of COVID-19 In India

The most common symptoms that have been reported by the patients at the hospital OPDs include low-grade hypothermia, persistent fever, dry or harsh cough, hoarse voice, congestion in the nasal passage, sometimes accompanied by a mild runny nose, mild gastrointestinal fatigue, muscle aches and headache. Other symptoms that can be difficult to read associated with the COVID-19 infection are such as nausea or diarrhoea, uneasiness in the throat or sore throat.

The patients have complained of fever, but it has lasted only a few days. While some others have reported several issues with the upper respiratory symptoms, including hoarse voice and throat pain, that too vanish away within a little time.

What Makes The Variant Different

The doctors have said that this particular variant shows symptoms like diarrhea, which is the most visible indicator; however, in the past, the visible symptoms were loss of smell and taste. The current infection has symptoms that resemble those of a seasonal viral infection. In most cases, it can be cured at home with no hospitalization required; the other symptoms, as sore throat and fever too can be managed at home with regular medication.

Is Your Diarrhoea, COVID?

Most of the patients have complained of loose stool and diarrhoea, which is accompanied by a fever that lasts for a few days, causing nausea and lethargy, the latter can persist for a longer time. In the young,g specifically severe gastrointestinal issues have been reported along with abdominal pain. Any patient who suffers from unexplained diarrhoea or any of the above symptoms should seek a test for COVID-19.

The people are seen to recover from the infection on their fourth day, whereas some with prior health conditions may take a little longer. Despite the mild symptoms, people are advised to take all necessary precautions and follow all COVID-related protocols, like banning travelling for some days, to prevent any massive outbreak.
